On The Horizon

Due to the late high demand on the first two releases of the XIH Boxcars, the third and fourth releases are being announced now so that adequate quantities will exist to satisify demand.  Due to the first two releases selling out prior to delivery, some of those schemes are being revisited albeit with variations.  Reservations currently are open for these models until December 1, so contact your dealer to insure delivery.

RELEASE 3 (XIHr3) is scheduled for a late First Quarter 2011 release.  The models in the third release are:

The reissue of #2253, the New Haven "State of Maine", is the same artwork as before but with two new road numbers.  The two reissue schemes of #2256, the New Haven repaint, feature the car as it looked in the late Penn Central / early Conrail era.  Item #2259 Canadian Pacific is a close but not exact representation of the prototype.  Item #2260 represents the cars dedicated to service for Northern Paper.  Item #2262 represents the first repaint of the Magor 1950 cars.

In Development ...

We have begun testing our new extended draft gear coupler pocket that was developed for the X58 boxcar.  The coupler box is a combination of brass and plastic and will accept Micro-Trains, Accu-Mate or McHenry couplers. The top of the coupler box and the pivot post are part of the plastic floor, and the brass superstructure is held in place with a panhead micro screw.  The cutout in the brass part allows clearance for the Micro-Trains centering pin and is not visible from normal angles.  The brass superstructure allows for draft gear that is closer in dimensions to the prototype than an all-plastic coupler box.  Here is a close-up digital representation view:

In this photo, the design is being tested on a pair of rapid prototype pilot models with an Accu-Mate coupler on the left and a Micro-Trains coupler on the right:

So far, the design is working flawlessly in preliminary tests with all three brands of operating knuckle couplers.  NOTE: due to the body-mounted couplers, accurate ride height and car length, the model will not traverse 9¾ inch radius curves.  Ten-inch radius or greater is required.

... and Beyond?

The release of the X58 will give ESM a definitive northeast lean in regard to the new tooling.  We hope to visit the rest of the North American eastern seaboard with models to follow.  This tease of a resin pilot model shows something we've had in the works for years.  In fact, it was designed simultaneously with the XIH, yet pushed to the back burner because the XIH and X58 have more potential schemes to model.  But after a solid run of X58 schemes, the time may be ripe for its debut.  More on this model in future issues of the newsletter.
